June 2011

Monday, June 20, 2011

I’ve tried to keep to a monthly blog entry, but there’s been so much do to around the house and in the garden that June seems to have come early this year. I’ve also been busy revising a manuscript that I finally sent to my editor on Saturday.

When I got back from the post office I tackled one of the overgrown flower beds. Some weeds I recognize easily, tall dense stalks that come out effortlessly when pulled, rambling vines that tangle and ensnare everything. Other blooms are harder to assess. Is it a weed or a flower? Should it be pulled or allowed to remain?

I think about my manuscript. Sometimes revising is easy. Some thoughts just stick out where they don’t belong or ramble and choke the story with unnecessary details. Others words are harder to assess. Is this musing necessary? Does it ramble or does it enrich the story?

A good editor is like an experienced, faithful gardner. She easily identifies the weeds and gently cultivates the flowers. She helps till the soil, and may even plant a few new seeds for the writer to nurture.

I’m glad I have an editor I trust. I wish I had a gardener!
